What is a democracy? It is a form of government- people elect(vote) for their leaders.
What country borders U.S. to the South? Mexico
What country borders U.S. to the North? Canada
How often is a presidential election held? Every four years
What does economy mean? The way in which a country manages its money + resources.
President's Day It is celebrated on the third Monday of February. It honors all past presidents of the United States.
Veterans' Day It is observed on November 11, and it honors the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Services.
Labor Day It is celebrated on the first Monday in September. The holiday celebrates the achievements of American workers.
Memorial Day This national holiday is celebrated on the last Monday in May. It honors U.S. soldiers who have died fighting for their country.
Columbus Day It is celebrated in the USA on the second Monday in October. It is a day in which we celebrate Christopher Columbus' trip from Spain to Hispaniola, North America in 1492.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day On the third Monday in January, we honor the life and dreams of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Flag Day On June 14th, we honor the American flag- a symbol of our country.
Thanksgiving On the last Thursday in November,we celebrate Thanksgiving. It was held to celebrate a good harvest + to thank the Indians for teaching them how to grow crops.
At what age do most children start school? Most children are 5 years old when they begin Kindergarten.
At what age do most children graduate from high school? Most children graduate from high school when they are 18 years old.
About how many hours per day are you in school? Our school day is about 6 1/2 hours long.
What months do children in New York State attend school? School begins early in September and ends late in June. (10 months)
What are some foods from the United States that we learned about? Chili Con Carne, Grits, Gumbo, Hush Puppies, Jambalaya, Pecan Pralines, Philadelphia cheescake, Shoo-Fly Pie, Whoopie Pies, and anything else discussed in the classroom.
