What were the changes following the Declaration of Independence? Reduced property holding requirements for voting, employers called boss, men and women called Mr. and Mrs., indentured servants released, primogeniture ended
How did new ideals affect the churches in 1786? (What law was established?) Separation of Church and State brought about by Thomas Jeferson. Anglican church disestablished.
What was discussed in the Continental Congress of 1774? The abolition of slavery, which the Quakers called for. Many states freed slaves, but none south of Penn.
What was the flaw to freeing slaves? Laws against interracial marriage, purchase of property, holding jobs, and educating children.
What role did women play in the new nation? They were the center of "civic virtue." Increased their education, as they were responsible for the survival of the nation by caring and educating their husbands and children.
What was requested by the Continental Congress of 1776? The states were to draft constitutions, officially forming states. (Written documents that represented fundamental law)
What was unique about Massachusetts' constitution? It was presented directly to the people for ratification, and could not be altered without calling another constitutional committee
What did Thomas Jefferson warn about the creation of the legislature in 1776? 173 representatives, with too much power, would be equally as oppressive as one
What effects did independence have on America's economy? Navigation laws more strict: American ships barred from British ports, fisheries disrupted, but more freedoms to trade with other foreign nations.
Explain the quote "Of foreign gewgaws let's be free, and wear the webs of liberty" A Penn. newspaper urged people to wear American goods to stop the destruction of American factories by British competition
What were the results of the Articles of Confederation, ratified in 1781? States become more unified, land west of the Appalachians ceded to government to create more states.
Explain the design of the Articles of Confederation Set up as unicameral body with most power(Judicial branch) to the states out of fear for a "GB Jr." with one vote/state. 9/13 to pass a bill, 13/13 to pass an amendment
What 2 necessary powers did Congress lack under the Articles of Confederation? Power to tax and Power to regulate commerce.
The Land Ordinance of 1785 Divided Northwest land of Ohio to be sold evenly to pay off national debt. (Each township 6 miles squared, 36 one mile lots, 16th reserved for schools)
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 States under federal control, after reaching a population of 60,000 people could create a constitution and apply to Congress to be a sate with full and equal rights. (Create between 3 and 5 states)
Why did Britain claim its soldiers remained in the U.S.? To make sure we honored the treaty and payed back debts
Explain the disunity of states under "King Congress" States printed own currency, taxed trade between states, some outlawed Continental money
Shay's Rebellion of 1786 Shays leads disgruntled farmers who want lower taxes and suspension of property takeovers who are met with strong opposition, but gave in to debtor relief
Philadelphia Convention of 1787 55 Delegates, including Hamilton, Franklin, and Madison met from states (except RI) to revise Articles. Decide to scrap them all together.
What changes were made at the Convention of 1787? Bicameral gov. with representation based on population in house of reps. and equal representation in senate. Executive branch with a president, 3/5 Compromise, Silence Act. Chief justices appointed for life, senators elected by state legislators.

Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 Penn. farmers feel singled out, especially since as not yet states they weren't represented in Congress. Washington sends 13,000 troops to make a point.

What were the affects of the French Revolution? People and parties divided on loyalty to France or Britain. Washington decides on neutrality.

Jay Treaty Washington sends Jay to Britain where they agree Britain will repay money from seizing ships and U.S. will repay pre-Revolutionary war debt
Pinckney Treaty Spain gives Americans free access to the Mississippi
XYZ Affair Adams sends envoys to talk to Prime Minister Talleyrand, but 3 agents want 32 million to let them meet. (In response to Jay Treaty)
Alien Acts Created by the federalists, The Nationalization Act makes it 14 years to be a citizen, Alien Friends acts means you can deport dangerous immigrants in times of peace, and contain immigrants of the enemy country at times of war.
Sedition Act Makes talking bad of government or its officials punishable by law
Virginia (Madison) and Kentucky (Jefferson) Resolutions Written in defiance to Alien and Sedition Acts, supporting idea of nullification
Describe the Federalists merchants, land owners, strong government, pro-British
Describe the Republicans common people, weak central government, pro-France
Paxton Boys Pennsylvania men slaughter a village of Indians. Marched on Philadelphia in demand of protection from Indians
John and Abigail Adams Abigail warns about women leading a revolution if they're not granted political rights. John assures her the men have only a title but the women are in charge.
