What is secession? secession was based on the logic of John Calhoun. In his theory of government, states retained the essence of their sovereignty when they joined the Union, and they had constitutional authority to secede from the Union South Carolina seceded in 1860.
Which states seceded? eleven states seceded..South Carolina (1), Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennesse..Last four didn't secede until after battle at Fort Sumter
What was the significance of Fort Sumter? By January 1, only Sumter remained a Union outpost in the midst of secessionist South Carolina. The Union underestimated the power of the Confederacy and didn't send reinforcement. Ended in conflict and began Civil War.
What compromise efforts took place to end secession? Crittenden Compromise slavery would exist in present or future territories south of the line, but prohibited north of it. This amendment introduced "slavery" into the Constitution. the Peace Conference struggled to find common ground. Toward the
What was the importance of border states? The states of the upper South provided a natural border between the two sides. loyalty of each state represented an important milestone to Confederacy and Union. In a month Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina had all joined the Confederacy.
Who had greater resources? North or South? Why? The North had greater resources. This is because the North had more people, industry, factories, miles of railroad, pig iron, goods, textiles, and firearms
What was/caused the Pratt Street Riot? Lincoln was sending troops to Washington to protect the capital. Some citizens didn't think troops should pass thru Maryland to be used against another sister state and they thought that these troops might be used to keep Maryland in the Union
What did Lincoln do that was significant during Pratt Street Riot? He suspended Habeas Corpus and put in effect martial law.
What were the challenges of the North and South during war? South, a new nation had to be created.North, the problems occurring in the Border States.Both sides believed they had distinct advantages
What was the most brutal conflict in American History? The Civil War was the most brutal and destructive conflict in American history. Much of the bloodshed resulted from changing military technology coupled with inadequate communications
Who appeared to have the advantage moving into 1863? What were some of the problems? both sides were facing? The South appeared to be winning. The North and South both were running out of resources. Both were running out of man power and moeny
What was the Emancipation Proclamation? The Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863. It freed all slaves in areas then in rebellion against the United States (i.e., the Confederacy). It made emancipation a war goal and speeded the destruction of slavery.
What was the Emancipation Proclamation suppose to accomplish? It was suppose to make the North fight harder for victory. Lincoln had advocated ending slavery’s expansion into new territories but not its outright abolition in the Southern States.
What was the impact of the Emancipation Proclamation? confirmed their insistence that the war for the Union must become a war for freedom. It added moral force to the Union cause and strengthened the Union both militarily and politically. As a milestone along the road to slavery's final destruction
