"Old" Immigrants Arrived throughout US history, mostly Protestants from Northern and Western Europe (Ireland, Scottland, England, French and German. Many already spoke English.
"New" Immigrants Began arriving in the late 1800’s from Southern and Eastern Europe – Italians, Poles, Greeks, Russians, Hungarians. Few spoke English. Harder for them to adapt to a new life in America.

Quota Act of 1921 law that limited the # of immigrants who could come to the US from certain countries
Settlement House community center organized in the late 1800’s to offer services to the poor (ex – Hull House was run by Jane Addams)
Vaudeville variety show made popular in the late 1800s that included comedians, song-and-dance routines, and acrobats
