iii. Why did Spaniards start bringing enslaved Africans to New Spain? They needed help on plantation
Toleration Act of 1649 – what is it, why important, who proposed it and why? Made it a crime to restrict the religious rights of Christians Virginia Colony – reasons for use of slave labor

Southern Colonies Economy – what was it based on; cash crops Farming and cash crops were the crops they used for money

Middle Colonies – reasons people wanted to settle there; contribution of slaves; staple crops; how did trade help support their economy? Religious tolerance; slaves were free and they worked as skilled laborers as wells as on farms and shipbuilding; they exported things as well as had imports
Navigation Acts –purpose Limit colonist trade
French and Indian War –How did it change the map of North America? It added land to Britain and there was a lot to fight about
Sugar Act – why was it created? Who requested it? Why? Add money for molasses and sugar
Stamp Act – what was it? Why did it upset colonists? Pay money for stamps for paper because it raised taxes on the actual colonists not the imported goods
Boston Tea Party – significance; how was Massachusetts punished for this action? The people dumped tea in the Boston Harbor and they were punished by the intolerable acts
Townshend Acts – why were they repealed? To reduce tension
First Continental Congress – what event led to this meeting Closing the port of Boston
Second Continental Congress – main issue debated; were opinions unified or divided; were colonists willing to compromise? How did they decide to handle the British To decide to break away from Britain, unified, yes, by the Olive Branch
Declaration of Rights – how did King George’s reaction to this affect the relationship between Britain and the colonies. It broke the ties
What was Congress doing while George Washington was preparing the colonists against the British? They were writing the declaration
Sons of Liberty Secret society to organized by Samuel Adams
Enlightenment/Great Awakening – how did these things influence colonists’ view of government? Gave people different ideas about government
What was the Dec. of Independence’s message regarding slavery? It did not serve the slaves
