Field Hockey Rules

Basic rules for class play

How many players per side? 11
Which side of the stick does a player use? flat side
Where does a player need to be in order to score? striking circle
What is shielding or blocking the ball with your body? obstruction
What are fouls? charge, hit or trip an opponent;playing in a dangerous way;raising the stick too high;using your feet on the ball
What is awarded to the nonoffending team following an infraction? free hit
What is awarded when an infraction is committed by a defender in the striking circle? offense isawarded a penalty corner
What happens when the ball is hit over the sideline? a push-in or hit-in is awarded to the opposition
When offense hits the ball over the back line what happens? defense receives a 16-yard hit
How does agame start and restart after a goal is scored? a pass back from the center of the field
