Who is Benedict Arnold? Revolutionary war general who turned to a traitor who wanted to share our Continental stronghold, prior he defended NY at Lake Champlain
Who is Richard Montgomery? Irish-born British army veteran who was a general in the Continental army, joined Benedict Arnold in a failed attempt to seize Quebec
Who is Thomas Paine? Author of Common Sense, pamphlet that laid out independence, radical views, later supporter of French Revolution
Who is Abigail Adams? Wife of John Adams, had own opinions and urged her husband about rights of women when creating government
Who is Richard Henry Lee? Virginia planter and revolutionary who was a member of the Continental Congress, introduced motion of Independence and was later introduced by Thomas Paine
Who is Lord Charles Cornwallis? British general during Revolution, failed to crush Greene's forces in NC, retreated to Virginia and was defeated at Yorktown (marked beginning of the end)
Who is William Howe? British general that was often victorious was crushed by Washington's Continental army by attacking Philly instead of reinforcing General Burgoyne at Saratoga
Who is John Burgoyne? (Gentleman Johnny) British general whose ill fated invasion of upstate NY, defeated and surrendered to general Horatio Gates at Saratoga
Who is Benjamin Franklin? American printer, inventor, statesman, and revolutionary; author of Poor Richards Almmanac, led revolutionary and signatory of the Declaration of Independence, commissioner of France and helped convince France to join
Who is Comte de Rochambeau? General in command of French forces during revolution, fought alongside Washington at Yorktown
Who is Nathanael Greene? General in command of Continental army in Carolina campaign of 1781; cleared Georgia and SC of British
Who is Joseph Brant? Mohawk chief and Anglican covert who sided with the British, believed British victory could stop westward expansion
Who is George Rogers Clark? American frontiersman who captured British forts along the Ohio River
Who is Admiral de Grasse? French admiral whose fleet blacked British reinforcements; allowed Washington and Rochambeau to capture Cornwallis at Yorktown
Describe the Articles of Confederation? First American Constitution, established U.S. as loose confederation of states under weak congress; Congress couldn't regulate commerce of collect taxes
What is the Old Northwest? Territories acquired by federal gov. from states, East of Mississippi river, south Great Lakes, well organized sale and management
What is the Land Ordinance of 1785? Provided for the sale of land in Old Northwestern, helped repay our debt
What is the Northwestern Ordinance? Created policies for administering the Northwestern opportunities; forbade slavery expansion into territories and path to statehood
Describe Shay's Rebellion? Armed uprising of western MA debtors seeking the lowering of taxes and no property foreclosures, put down quickly but caused fear of mob rule
Who is Daniel Shays? Revolutionary war veteran who led the group of debtors for the rebellion against MA gov., wanted paper money and lighter taxes, raised Spector of mob rule
Describe the Virginia Plan? "Large state plan" proposal for new constitution, called for proportional representation in both houses, favored larger states and prompted smaller states to come up with own plan (population by representment)
Describe the New Jersey Plan? "Small state plan" put out at Philly convention, proposed equal representation of states, regardless pop., smaller states feared large states would dominate
What is the Great Compromise? Measure that coordinated the New Jersey and Virginia plans, gave states proportional representation in House and equal representation in Senate
What is Common Law? Laws originating from court rulings and customs; US constitution grew out Anglo-American common law tradition
What is civil law? Body of written law enacted through legislative statues or constitutional provisions
What is the three-fifths compromise? Determined slaves would be counted as 3/5s of a person for purpose of apportioning taxes and representation
