Describe the relationship between people in eastern cities and pioneers who went west? People in the West provided raw materials to send East for manufacturing.
Why was the United States government interested in getting a transcontinental railroad built? People and goods would move across the country quickly and be less expensive. Easy travel could lead to rapid growth of businesses.
Which of these attracted people to California in 1849? A gold rush.
How did the railroad change the cattle industry? Western cattle could be sold and transported to meat-packing plants in the East.
What are examples of the impact the railroads had on the West? Raw materials could be shipped quicker, passengers could travel by train across the country, cities and towns developed throughout the western frontier.

What generalization can be made about the annexation(taking over territory) of Hawaii? The United States had strong financial and strategic reasons for wanting to control Hawaii.
