European Colonization & Settlement

Mercantilism Belief that trade leads to wealth. Raw materials are sent from colonies to Europe.
Pilgrims Group of English Protestant dissenters who established Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in 1620 to seek religious freedom after having lived briefly in the Nether- lands.
Puritans A religious group who wanted to purify the Church of England. They came to America for religious freedom and settled Massachusetts Bay.
Triangular Trade A three way system of trade during 1600-1800s Africa sent slaves to America, America sent Raw Materials to Europe, and Europe sent Guns and Rum to Africa
Quakers Protestant reformers who believe in the equality of all people
Plantation A large farm that specializes in the production of crops for sale.
Charter A legal document giving certain rights to a person or company.
Representative Government system of government in which people vote for representatives to make public policies and laws.
Colonization One country taking over another area to be used for their benefit.
Cash Crops crops, such as tobacco, sugar, and cotton, raised in large quantities in order to be sold for profit.
Exploration to travel for the purpose of discovery.
self-government a system of government in which people make their own laws.
trade the action of buying and selling goods and services.
harbor a sheltered place along a shoreline where ships can anchor safely.
Boycott A refusal to buy or use goods and services.
Taxation Money collected by a governing system
Loyalist A person who supported the British during the American Revolution
Patriot American colonist who favored American independence
Civil Disobedience the refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest.
