Economy of the South: (Agricultural)---was made up of plantations and small farms that produced a cash crop
Labor force of the South: depended on slave labor
Eli Whitney (1796) invented the cotton gin
Antebellum Times: planter someone who owned 20 or more slaves engaged in the production of a cash crop
Antebellum Times: Yeoman farmer small farmers who mostly grew subsistance crops and had no slaves or just a few
Antebellum Times: overseer someone hired to supervise the work of the slaves
Antebellum Times: slave codes laws that regulated every aspect of a slave's life
Compromise of 1820 worked out by the Great Compromiser Henry Clay
Compromise of 1820 1) Missouri was admitted as a slave state 2) Maine was admitted as a free state 3) slavery would be prohibited north of the 36-30 parallel line
Harriot Tubman the most famous conductor of the underground railroad; she personally led over 300 people to freedom
underground railroad 1) stations---safe places for runaway slaves to hide/rest 2) they are trying to escape as far north as possible
Compromise of 1850 Henry Clay
Compromise of 1850 1) CA entered as a free state (North) 2) the remaining territories out west could choose for themselves on issue of slavery (South) 3) a stronger fugitive slave law was passed (South) 4) slave trade in Washington DC would end (North)
States Rights Senator John C. Calhoun---wrote the South Carolina Exposition & Protest-----it protested tariffs
nullification an individual state can declare a law passed by the federal gov't null & void; not binding (not used) on their state
succeed to voluntarily withdraw from the Union
Abolitionist Movement early 1800s-Civil War the anti-slavery movement that wanted to end slavery everywhere in the US
William Lloyd Garrison he published the anti-slavery newspaper called the Liverator
Fredrick Douglas the most famous speaker of the Abolitionist Movement
Harriot Beecher Stowe she published the controversial Uncle Tom's Cabin (evils of slavery)
Republican Party (1854) stop the expansion of slavery into the territories
Election of 1856 Democratic Candidate----James Buchanan (won) Republican Candidate----John C. Fremont
Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) established that these 2 territories would be allowed to decide on the issue of slavery themselves
Dred Scott Supreme Court said that slaves were property and couldn't sue someone in court
John Brown's Raid (1859) he led a group of abolitionists & attacked the arsenal in Harpers Ferry Virginia PURPOSE: start slave rebellion
Election of 1860 1) Republican---Abraham Lincoln (won) 2) Democrat---Stephen Douglas 3) Southern Democrat---John C. Breckenridge 4) Constitutional Union Party---John Bell
In early 1861, 7 states left the Union and formed the Confederate Sates of America SC, MS, FL, AL, GA, LA, TX

in April 1861, the upper south left the Union VA, TN, NC, AR
where was the capital of the Confederate States of America moved to? Richmond, VA
