TermDefinition
Confederation A type of government in which an alliance of independent states creates a central government with very limited power.
Government Institution through which a society makes and enforces its public policies.
Unitary Type of government where all power is held by the “one” central government and the local governments do what the central government tells them to do.
Legislative This branch of the government writes our laws.
StateCountry A body of people living in a defined territory, organized politically, and having the power to make and enforce laws without the consent of a higher authority.
Executive This branch of our government enforces our laws.
Judicial This branch of our government interprets the laws and makes sure they don’t violate the constitution.
Monarchy A government in which power is passed down hereditarily (through the family).
Parliamentary A form of government in which the executive leadership is chosen by, and held responsible to, the legislature, as well as being a member of the legislature.
Anarchy The absence of government.
Oligarchy A government ruled totally by a small group of people, usually wealthy and well educated.
Dictatorship A government in which those who rule cannot be held accountable to the will of the people. They rule completely and historically are not viewed as good.
Democracy A system of government in which supreme authority rests with the people.
VirginiaPlan Madison’s plan for a national government with greatly expanded powers and representation based on population.
ConnecticutCompromise A plan that called for a bicameral legislature, which had a house that reflected representation, based on population and a senate in which every state had the same number of senators.

NewJerseyPlan This plan called for a unicameral legislature where each state got one vote each and benefited small states.
