| What was the Freedmen's Bureau? | It was created by Republicans in Congress to aid newly freed people and poor whites in the south, providing food, clothing, medical care, and education for those in need. The Freedmen's Bureau also helped people find jobs with fair pay and land. |
| What were Black Codes? | Black Codes were laws designed to help control newly freed African Americans. The codes made it illegal for African Americans to own or rent farms. Laws allowed officials to fine or arrest African Americans who didn't have jobs. |
| What was the Civil Rights Act of 1866? | This law gave the federal government power to get involved in state affairs to protect African Americans' rights. |
