Who are Arcadians? French residents of Nova Scotia, where many were uprooted by the British and scattered
Describe the French and Indian War? Nine year war between British and French in North America, resulted in the French leaving North America, French resentment
Describe the Seven Years' War? First global war on four continents, like France, England, Spain, Prussia, etc, the French and Indian War was Americas portion, England had lots of debt
What is the Albany Congress? Intercolonial Congress summoned by the British gov. to grow colonial unity and get Iroquois support against French
Who are Regulars? Trained soldiers, distinct from militia or conscripts, British generals commanded experienced regulars
What is Quebec, Battle of? British victory against the French forces on the outskirts of Quebec marking the soon to be end of the French rule in North America
What is Pontiac's War? Campaign by Ottawa chief Pontiac to get British out of Ohio country, brutally crushed by British, resulted with British giving blankets infested with smallpox
What is the Proclamation of 1763? Prohibited settlers from going the Appalachians, contributing resentment to British
What is republicanism? Political theory of representative government, based on popular sovereignty, strong emphasis on liberty
What are radical whigs? 18th century British political commentators who talked of political corruption and threat of liberty posed by arbitrary power
What is mercantilism? Economic theory that's linked to a nations political and military power to bullion reserves, favors protectionism, increase exports
What is the Sugar Act? A tax on imported sugar from the West Indies, lowered substantially in response to protests
What is the Quartering Act? Required colonists to house, take care of, and make food for British soldiers, causing resentment
What is the stamp tax? Unpopular tax on many paper goods, repealed in 1766 because of protests, "No Taxation without Representation"
What are the admiralty courts? Used to try offenders for violating the multiple Navigation Acts passed, colonists argued courts encroached on rights
What is the Stamp Act Congress? Assembly of delegates from nine colonies who met in NYC to draft a petition to repeal the Stamp Act
What are the nonimportation agreements? Boycotts against British goods in response to the Stamp Act, agreements effective protest
Who are the Sons of Liberty? Aggressive patriotic groups who went against the stamp act and enforced the nonimportation agreement
Who are the Daughters of Liberty? Aggressive patriotic groups who went against the stamp act and enforced the nonimportation agreement
What is the Declaratory Act? Passed alongside the repealed Stamp Act, reaffirmed Parliments unqualified sovereignty over colonies
What are the Townshend Acts? Levies on glass, white lead, paper, paint, and tea, the proceeds were used to pay colonial governors, caused more protests
Describe the Boston Massacre? Clash between Bostonians and Red Coats, who fired at the taunting crowd, killing or hurting 11
What is the committees of correspondence? Local committees all over MA, later in each colony, to coordinate colonial opposition to British policies through letters
Describe the Boston Tea Party? Protest against the East India's company newly acquired monopoly on tea trade, colonists then dumped 342 chests of tea into the ocean
What are the "intolerable acts"? Series of retaliations to the Boston Tea Party, revoking a number of rights in the MA colonial charter, expanding the Quartering Act, in response to the Continental Congress met and agreed to boycott British goods
What is the Quebec Act? Allowed French residents in Quebec to retain their traditional, political, and religious institutions, and extended the boundaries of the province
What was the First Continental Congress? Convention of delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies, convened in Philly to craft a response for the Intolerable acts, established the Association
What is The Association? Nonimportation agreement craft during the First Continental Congress calling for complete boycott of British goods
Describe the Lexington and Concord, Battles of? First battles of Revolutionary war fought outside Boston, colonial militia successfully defended stores of munition, forcing British to retreat
What is Valley Forge? Encampment where Washington poorly equipped army spent in a freezing winter, the starving, cold soldiers reflected weakness
Who are camp followers? Women and children who followed the Continental army during the Revolution, providing vital services
Who is William Pitt? British parliamentarian who rose to prominence during the French and Indian War as the brilliant tactician for Britain
Who is Pontiac? Ottawa chief who led the uprising against British in the French and Indian War
Who is John Hancock? Boston smuggler and leader of colonial resistance, served as president of second Continental Congress
Who is George Grenvile? British Prime minister who fueled tensions between Britain and North American colonies through strict enforcement of Navigation laws, and sugar and stamp act support
Who is Charles Townshend? British prime minister who passed the Townshend Acts sparking fierce protests and imperial conflict
Who is Crispus Attucks? Runaway slave who was the leader of the protest and was shot first in the Boston Massacre
Who is George III? Britain monarch during the run-up to the American revolution, contributed to imperial crisis, wanted to assert dominance on colonies
Who is Lord North? Tory prime minister and pliant aide to George III, ineffective leadership and wanted colonial subordination
Who is Samuel Adams? Boston Revolutionary who organized MA committees of correspondence to oppose British, delegate to first and second Continental congress
Who is Thomas Hutchinson? Royal governor of MA during the run up to the revolution, misjudged colonial zeal during Tea act controversy, prompted Boston tea party by insisting East India ships unload in Boston
Who is Marquis de Lafayette? French Nobel who served as major general in the colonial army during revolution, aided colonies, and helped get French support
Who is Baron Von Steuben? German born inspector general of the Continental army, and helped train the novice colonial militia
Who is Lord Dunmore? Royal governor of VA who promised freedom to runaway slaves who joined the British army
