| Sahara Desert | A giant dry desert in Northern Africa that surrounded ancient Egypt and acted as a natural barrier against enemies |
| cataracts (river) | Shallow, rocky areas or waterfalls along a river that make sailing difficult or impossible |
| The Nile | The main river flowing through Egypt, providing water, fertile soil, and transportation to the people |
| delta | A low, triangle-shaped area of fertile land created where a river splits into smaller branches before flowing into the sea |
| silt | Rich, fertile soil and tiny rocks left behind on the riverbanks after a river floods |
| solar calendar | A calendar based on the movement of the Sun and the Earth's orbit around it |
| shaduf | A long wooden pole with a bucket on one end and a weight on the other, used to lift water from a river into farm fields |
| occupation | A person's job, profession, or regular work |
| social structure | The way a society organizes its people into different groups based on power, wealth, and status |
| scribe | A specially trained person whose job was to read, write, keep official records, and copy documents |
| hierarchy | A system that ranks people or groups above one another according to their importance, power, or status |
| afterlife | The life that ancient Egyptians believed began after a person died, where their spirit lived forever |
| obelisk | A tall, four-sided stone pillar with a pyramid-shaped top, carved with writing to honor gods or rulers |
| pyramids | Massive stone structures with square bases and triangular sides built as royal tombs for pharaohs |
| An ancient Egyptian system of writing that used pictures, symbols, and signs to represent words and sounds | |
| A simplified, faster script version of hieroglyphics used for everyday writing, business, and record-keeping | |
| papyrus | A tall reed plant that grows near the Nile, processed to make paper, boats, sandals, and mats |
| sphinx | A large stone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human or pharaoh |
| mummification | The process of preserving a dead body by drying it out and wrapping it in linen cloth |
| sarcophagus | A heavy stone or wooden outer coffin, often decorated with carved pictures and writing |
| polytheism | The belief in or worship of more than one god or deity |
| pharaoh | The supreme king or ruler of ancient Egypt, who was viewed as a living god on Earth |
| dynasty | A family line of rulers where power is passed down from parents to children over generations |
| Queen Hatshepsut | A famous female pharaoh who expanded Egyptian trade routes and built impressive monuments |
| King Tutankhamun | A young pharaoh whose tomb was discovered almost completely intact, full of rich treasures |
| Ramses the Great | A powerful pharaoh who ruled for over 60 years, built huge monuments, and expanded Egypt's empire |
| cartouche | An oval border wrapped around carved hieroglyphics that shows the written name of a pharaoh or royal person |
| cultural diffusion | The spread of ideas, beliefs, customs, technologies, and goods from one group of people to another |
| Nubia | An ancient kingdom south of Egypt along the Nile River and a trading partner with Egypt |
