What are the three branches of governement? Legislative, Executive, and Judicial.
What does the Legislative branch do? Writes/makes laws.
What is another name for the Legislative branch? Congress
What are the two houses of congress? The senate and House of Representatives.
What is the upper house of Congress? The senate.
How many U.S. senators are there? 100
How many senators does each state have? 2
How long does a senator serve? 6 years.
What is the lower house of Congress? The House of Representatives.
How many U.S. representatives are there? 435
How long does a representative serve? 2 years.
What determines the number of representatives a state has? The state's population.
How many U.S. representatives does Louisiana have? 6
What does the Executive Branch do? Carries out the laws.
Who heads the Executive Branch? The President.
How often is the President elected? Every 4 years.
Who makes sure laws are carried out? The president.
Who deals with other countries? The president
Who is the Commander in Chief of the U.S. armed forces? The president.
What does the Judicial branch do? Checks whether laws follow the constitution
What makes up the Judicial branch? The Supreme Court and federal courts.
How many Supreme court justices are there? 9
Who chooses Supreme Court justices? The president
How long do Supreme Court justices serve? For llife.
What is a veto? When the president rejects a bill from congress.
What can congress do to a presidential veto? Reject/override the veto
Who can declare war? Congress
Who can make a treaty with another country? The president
Who must approve a treaty made by the president? The senate
What is checks and balances? A system that allows each branch to limit/check the powers of the other branches.
What happens first after Congress writes a bill? It goes to a committee for discuession.
What happens if a bill passes committee? The house that proposed it must approve it.
What happens after the first house approves the bill? The other house must approve it.
Where does a bill go after both houses approve it? To the president.
What can the president do with a bill? Sign it or veto it.
Congress is writing a new law. Which branch is working? Legislative Branch
The president is carrying out a law. Which branch is working? Executive Branch
A court decides whether a law follows the Constitution. Which branch is working? Judicial Branch
The president refuses to approve a bill. What did the resident do? Vetoed it.
The president makes a treaty with another country. Who must approve it? The senate.
The president wants the U.S. to declare war. Who has the power to declare war? Congress
A bill passes the House of Representatives. Where must it go next? The senate.
A bill passes both houses of Congress. Where does it go next? The president.
A state gains a lot of population (people). Which part of Congress would gain members? The house of representatives.
Which part of congress gives equal representation? The senate.
Louisiana and Texas have different populations. Do they still have the same number of senators? Yes. Each state has 2 senators.
Why might Texas have more representatives than Louisiana? Because the number of representatives depends on population.
The president vetoes a bill passed by congress. What principle does this demonstrate? Checks and balances.
Congress rejects/overrides the president's veto. What principle does this demonstrate? Checks and balances.
