When did George Washington become president? April 30, 1789
Why was George Washington chosen to be the first president? He was a trusted leader, a hero of the American Revolution, and respected by Americans.
Where did Washington want to go after the American Revolution? Home to Mount Vernon.
Why did Washington return to public service? The United States was struggling and needed strong leadership.
Who was Washington's vice president? John Adams
What is an inauguration? A formal ceremony that begins a person's time in office.
What is an oath of officcce? A promise to obey the law and do the responsibilities of a job.
What is a precedent? An example that guides future actions or decisions.
What is the president's cabinet? A group of advisers who help the president make decisions.
Why were farmers angry during the Whiskey Rebellion? The government placed a tax on whiskey.
How did Washington respond to the Whiskey Rebellion? He led troops to show the government could enforce laws.
Why was Washington's response to the Whiskey Rebellion important? It showed that the government could enforce laws.
What does neutral mean? Not helping either side in conflict.
What problems worried Washington? Political parties and the U.S. becoming involved in conflicts between other countries.
How many terms did Washington serve as president? Two terms
Why did Washington decide not to run for a third term? He didn't want to seem like a king who would never give up power.
What was the main message of Washington's farewell address? Americans should work together and remember what they have in common.
Name two ways Americans honor George Washington. Washington Monument. Presidents day, or $1 bill
What does resignation mean? Leaving or stepping down from a job.
What is an obelisk? A tall stone pillar with a square base and pointed top.
