Names of Explorers

QuestionAnswer
Leif Eriksson (c. 1000) Norwegian explorer, son of Erik the Red, was first European to explore the Americas.
Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) King of Portugal who established a school of navigation and financed trips of exploration.
Bartolomeu Dias (1457-1500) was a great Portuguese navigator and explorer who explored Africa's coast. He and his crew almost made it to Asia, but they turned against him and made him take them home because supplies were low.
Vasco da Gama (1460-1524) was a Portuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route from Portugal to the East. The first person to make it around the tip of Africa and reach Asia.
Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) Italian explorer, was convinced he could reach Asia by sailing westward across the Atlantic. Gained the support of Spain's monarchs and commanded small fleet that reached the "New World", setting off a tide of European exploration of the area.
Ferdinan Magellan (1480-1521)Portuguese captain of a Spanish fleet that sought western route to Asia via "Southern Ocean", found passage through South American, now known as the Strait of Magellan, but died during expedition.Only 18 crewmembers in 1 boat finished journey.
