Names of Explorers

QuestionAnswer
Leif Eriksson (c. 1000) Norwegian explorer, son of Erik the Red, was first European to explore the Americas.
Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) King of Portugal who established a school of navigation and financed trips of exporation.
Bartolomeu Dias In 1488 Portugese navigator, led a trip from south Portugal along Africa. Storm blew his ships around the tip of Africa. They started to run low on supplies so they ended their voyage and went back to Portugal.
Vasco de Gama In July 1497 he left Lisbon, Portugal on an expedition to find a route to Asia, he went around the Cape of Good Hope and ended up in southwestern India the next year.
Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) Italian explorer, he was convinced that he could reach Asia by sailing westward across the Atlantic Ocean. Gained the support of Spain's monarchs, commanded small fleet that reached "New World "setting off European exploration there.
Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521)Portugese captain of a Spanish fleet was looking for a western route to Asia via the "Southern Ocean", he found a way through the Strait of Magellan in South America, he died on trip. His crew of 18 were the first to circumnavigate the world.
