Lief Eriksson the son of Erik the Red. Sailed to the North American coast in the year 1000. Left due to attacks from Native Americans.
Prince Henry the Navigator Portuguese prince responsible for advances that made exploration possible. Started a school for navigation and financed mapmaking and exploration.
Bartolomeu Dias Explored the west coast of Africa looking for a new route to Asia. A storm blew his ships around the tip of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope. He wanted to continue but his supplies were low and his men did not want to continue.
Vacso de Gama Portuguese explorer. First to make the trip around the Cape of Good Hope and arrive in India in 1497.
Christopher Columbus Italian explorer who sailed for Spain. In 1492 he sailed three ships and 90 sailors in uncharted seas. Landed in the Bahamas, Cube and eventually Haiti/Dominican Republic.
Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese explorer who sought a western route to Asia. Sailed through the Straight of Magellan. He died on the trip but his crew continued and were the first circumnavigate the world.
Bartolomeu de las Casas Spanish priest who sailed with Columbus. He spoke out against the treatment of the Taino people.
