Government Basics

TermDefinition
Oligarchy a small group of people having control of a country
Autocracy A system of government in which the power to rule is in the hands of a single individual
dictatorship A form of government in which the leader has absolute power and authority.
absolute monarchy A government in which the king or queen has absolute power.
head of government The executive role that deals with the everyday tasks of running the state, such as formulating and executing policy
democracy A political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them
Federal Government the powers of government are divided between a central government and several local governments.
Confederate Government an alliance of independent states
Unitary Government A way of organizing a nation so that all power resides in the central government.
Parliamentary Democracy A democracy in which parliament chooses the government.
Presidential Democracy A form of government in which the citizens directly elect a president
