| Oligarchy | a small group of people having control of a country |
| Autocracy | A system of government in which the power to rule is in the hands of a single individual |
| dictatorship | A form of government in which the leader has absolute power and authority. |
| absolute monarchy | A government in which the king or queen has absolute power. |
| head of government | The executive role that deals with the everyday tasks of running the state, such as formulating and executing policy |
| democracy | A political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them |
| Federal Government | the powers of government are divided between a central government and several local governments. |
| Confederate Government | an alliance of independent states |
| Unitary Government | A way of organizing a nation so that all power resides in the central government. |
| Parliamentary Democracy | A democracy in which parliament chooses the government. |
| Presidential Democracy | A form of government in which the citizens directly elect a president |
