Sugar Act placed a special tax on certain imported goods to the colonies
Stamp Act a British stamp on any legal document in the colonies
Quartering Act required the colonists to house and feed British soldiers during peacetime
Townshend Act placed direct taxes on various items made in the colonies (glass and paint)
Boston Massacre British soldiers fired into a crowd killing 5 colonists
Tea Act it granted the East India Tea Company a monopoly over the sale of tea in the colonies; this led to the Boston Tea Party
Reasons colonists wanted independence: 1) the thought that the king (George III) and parliament had too much power 2) no taxation without representation
First Continental Congress (1774) representative from the colonies met to discuss their grievances against the English
RESULT of the 1st Continental Congress: issued declaration of right which said that the colonies needed more self-government but would remain loyal to the king
Second Continental Congress (1775) Independence Hall; raised an army and appointed George Washington the commander of Continental Army
Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) written by Thomas Jefferson 1) it said that the colonies were now free and independent from England 2) it said that people were entitled to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness
Key Battles of American Revolution: 1) Lexington and Concord 2) Bunker Hill 3) Trenton 4) Saratoga 5) Cowpens
Lexington and Concord (1775) 1st shots of the revolution; group of MINUTEMEN fought against the BRITISH ARMY
Bunker Hill (1775) the 1st major battle; the British took control of Boston after the colonists ran out of GUNPOWDER
Trenton (1776) Christmas night Gen. Washington led his men across the Delaware River and defeated the Hessian soldiers (Germans); then he moved over and fought at and captured Princeton
Saratoga (1777) happened in upstate New York; it was a major turning point because this victory caused the French to enter the war
Cowpens (1780) a major victory over British in southern colonies; fought between the Patriots against the British and loyalists
