| PILGRIMS: | A group of English settlers who came to America in 1620 on the Mayflower to find religious freedom. They started the Plymouth Colony. |
| DISSENTER: | Someone who disagrees with the beliefs or practices of the main group, especially in religion. |
| MAYFLOWER COMPACT: | An agreement signed by the Pilgrims before landing in Plymouth. It was the first plan for self-government in the colonies. |
| QUAKERS: | A peaceful religious group that believed everyone was equal. They were often persecuted in England and founded the colony of Pennsylvania. |
| PERSECUTE: | To treat someone cruelly or unfairly, usually because of their religious beliefs. |
| ROGER WILLIAMS: | A minister who was kicked out of Massachusetts for his religious ideas. He founded Rhode Island, a colony known for religious freedom. |
| TOLERANCE: | Accepting or allowing different beliefs or opinions, especially in religion. |
| PURITANS: | A strict religious group that wanted to “purify” the Church of England. Many came to America to practice their religion freely, especially in Massachusetts. |
