Unit 5 Constitution and Citizenship
| Term | Definition |

| Separation of Powers | The idea that powers of government should be clearly defined and divided into legislative, executive, and judicial branches |
| Popular Sovereignty | The people are the primary source of the government’s authority |
| Limited Government | The government has only the powers that the Constitution gives it |
| Checks and Balances | Each branch of government has the power to check, or limit, the powers of the other branches |
| Federalism | Division of power between the federal government and the states |
| Republicanism | Citizens elect representatives to carry out their will |
| Individual Rights | These are protected by the Constitution (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to trial by jury, etc.) |
| Veto | To reject |
| Override | To pass a law despite a presidential veto |
| Electoral College | A complex system of electing the president |
| Appeal | To ask that a court’s decision be reviewed by a higher court |
| Amendment | A change to the Constitution |
