Unit 5 Constitution and Citizenship

TermDefinition
Separation of Powers The idea that powers of government should be clearly defined and divided into legislative, executive, and judicial branches
Popular Sovereignty The people are the primary source of the government’s authority
Limited Government The government has only the powers that the Constitution gives it
Checks and Balances Each branch of government has the power to check, or limit, the powers of the other branches
Federalism Division of power between the federal government and the states
Republicanism Citizens elect representatives to carry out their will
Individual Rights These are protected by the Constitution (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to trial by jury, etc.)
Veto To reject
Override To pass a law despite a presidential veto
Electoral College A complex system of electing the president
Appeal To ask that a court’s decision be reviewed by a higher court
Amendment A change to the Constitution
