Unit 4 Creating the Constitution

TermDefinition
Constitution a document stating the rules under which a government will operate
Executive The person who runs the government and sees that the laws are carried out (enforced/executed)
Confederation A political alliance between independent states to unite for common action
Economic depression A period when business activities slow, prices and wages drops, and unemployment rises
Judicial branch The part of the government made up of courts and judges to interpret laws
Compromise An agreement in which each side gives up part of what it wants
Ratify (Ratification) To formally approve
Federalists Supporters of the new Constitution favoring a strong central government (James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay)
Anti- Federalists Opponents of the new Constitution who favored a weaker central government and stronger state rights (George Mason, Patrick Henry)
Convention An assembly or meeting of people who discuss, debate, and vote on a particular issue
Legislative Branch The portion of the government that writes laws
Bill of Rights A portion of the Constitution protecting certain individual rights (the first ten amendments to our Constitution)
