| Tribal sovereignty | The authority, or power, of tribal nations to make decisions about its own citizens and land |
| Tribal nation | A group of Indigenous people that share a culture, live in a particular area, and have a system of government to make laws and organize themselves |
| Indigenous | The first known group of people that lived in a place; in America, the many different tribal nations that lived here before European colonization. Today, they live all over America. |
| reservation | land set aside by the government for an indigenous tribe to use and live on |
| culture | the beliefs, practices, and traits of everyday life shared by people in a particular place or time, including food, art, music, houses, and jobs or roles. |
| sovereignty | being able to control and make decisions for yourself, without other people or groups controlling you |
| Pueblo | This Indigenous nation lived in the Southwest, where there was desert, canyons, and flatlands. They used adobe clay to make bricks to build tall, terraced buildings. |
| Lakota | This Indigenous nation lived in the Plains and moved a lot to follow the buffalo, which they respected and relied on for food, fur, and other materials. They lived in cone-shaped tipis made of wood and animal skin. |
| Powhatan | This Indigenous nation lived in the Eastern Woodlands and grew corn, beans, squash, and tobacco. They fished with wooden canoes and nets made of reeds, and lived in round, dome-shaped houses made of trees and woven mats. |
