Indigenous Nations

Tribal sovereignty The authority, or power, of tribal nations to make decisions about its own citizens and land
Tribal nation A group of Indigenous people that share a culture, live in a particular area, and have a system of government to make laws and organize themselves
Indigenous The first known group of people that lived in a place; in America, the many different tribal nations that lived here before European colonization. Today, they live all over America.

Pueblo This Indigenous nation lived in the Southwest, where there was desert, canyons, and flatlands. They used adobe clay to make bricks to build tall, terraced buildings.
Lakota This Indigenous nation lived in the Plains and moved a lot to follow the buffalo, which they respected and relied on for food, fur, and other materials. They lived in cone-shaped tipis made of wood and animal skin.
Powhatan This Indigenous nation lived in the Eastern Woodlands and grew corn, beans, squash, and tobacco. They fished with wooden canoes and nets made of reeds, and lived in round, dome-shaped houses made of trees and woven mats.
