What is genocide? The destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.
Describe the stages of genocide Classification, Symbolization, Dehumanization and Polarization, Discrimination and Persecution, Organization and Preparation, Extermination and Denial.
What is Classification? The stage where people are divided into groups based on race, religion, ethnicity or identity.
Give an example of Classification during the Holocaust. The Nuremberg Laws classified people as Jewish based on ancestry.
What is Symbolization? The stage where symbols or labels are used to identify a targeted group.
Give an example of Symbolization during the Holocaust. Jews were forced to wear the yellow Star of David.
What is Polarization? The stage where propaganda and laws increase division between groups.
Give an example of Dehumanization and Polarization during the Holocaust. Nazi propaganda compared Jews to rats and portrayed them as a threat to Germany.
What is Extermination? The mass killing of members of a specific group.
What is Denial? The stage where perpetrators hide evidence and deny responsibility.
How did the Nazis practice Denial? They used coded language and destroyed evidence of mass murder.
What was the Holocaust? The genocide carried out by Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945 that killed about six million Jews.
Who led Nazi Germany during the Holocaust? Adolf Hitler
Who were the main victims of the Holocaust? Jews, Roma and Sinti, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and political dissidents.
Why did Hitler target Jews? He blamed them for Germany's problems and believed they threatened racial purity.
What role did nationalism play in the Holocaust? Nazi nationalism promoted loyalty to Germany and portrayed Jews and other groups as threats to the nation.
What role did racial/genetic superiority play in the Holocaust? Nazis believed Aryans were genetically superior and used this belief to justify genocide.
What does anti-Semitic mean? Showing prejudice or hostility to Jewish people.
What was Kristallnacht? A violent attack on Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues in 1938.
What was Ghettoization? The forced relocation of Jews into overcrowded ghettos.
What was the Pink List? Police records used to identify and arrest suspected gay men.
What was Paragraph 175? A German law used to criminalize homosexuality.
What was the Wannsee Conference? A 1942 meeting where Nazi officials coordinated the Final Solution.
What was the Final Solution? The Nazi plan to systematically exterminate European Jews.
What was Zyklon B? A poisonous gas used in Nazi gas chambers.
What were Model Camps? Camps used to deceive outsiders into believing prisoners were treated well.
What was the Holodomor? A man-made famine in Ukraine during 1932–1933 that caused millions of deaths.
Who caused the Holodomor? Joseph Stalin and the Soviet government.
Why did Stalin cause the Holodomor? To strengthen Soviet control over Ukraine and force collectivization.
How did Stalin cause the Holodomor? By confiscating grain, enforcing collectivization, punishing resistance, and restricting movement.
What is a famine? An extreme shortage of food that causes widespread starvation.
What was collectivization? A Soviet policy that forced farmers to give up private land and join collective farms.
Who were the Kulaks? Wealthier peasants who resisted collectivization and were targeted by Stalin.
What was the 5 Year Plan? Stalin's economic program to rapidly industrialize the Soviet Union.
What role did propaganda play in the Holodomor? The Soviet government used propaganda to justify policies and hide the famine.
Why is the Holodomor considered a genocide? Because government policies deliberately caused mass starvation among Ukrainians.
Who were the Einsatzgruppen? Mobile killing squads that carried out mass executions.
What symbol were Jews forced to wear? The yellow Star of David.
What symbol identified gay men in concentration camps? The Pink Triangle.
