Vocabulary Set

TermDefinition
network A complex, interconnected group or system.
descent Ancestry or line of heritage.
emancipation The act or process of setting someone free from control or slavery.
plantation A large estate or farm on which crops are grown, especially by workers who live there.
fugitive A person who flees from danger or persecution.
overseer One who watches over and gives direction to the workers.
Quaker A member of the Society of Friends, a religious group that rejects violence.
abolitionist Someone who works to eliminate slavery.
prejudice Unreasonable distrust, judgment, or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion.
compass A device used to determine geographic direction.
spiritual A religious folk song of African American origin.
secede To withdraw formally from a state or political union.
