What do we call the period from 1920 to 1929? we call it the Roaring 20s
What does it mean to “buy something on credit”? It means to pay for it later on
What is a stock? a stock is a shared part of a business
Why do people buy stocks? so they can earn money from their stocks and sell it for more
What does depression mean when referring to the economy? The depression meant the low amount of money in the economy and the large amount of money lost.
What does prosperity mean? prosperity means wealth
What is a mortgage? a loan to buy something like a house or car
Who was elected president in 1928? Herbert Hoover
What is interest? a amount of extra money charged buy a bank when you get a loan
What did World War I veterans try to do in 1932? they tried to get their bonus early
How did the government respond to the WWI veterans camping out in the capital? The government responded with tear gas & fire
Who became president in 1933? Franklin D Roosevelt
What did people call the broadcasts that the president gave? They called them fire side chats.
What did Roosevelt want to do instead of just giving money to unemployed workers? Roosevelt wanted to give them jobs.
What is a deficit? Spending more money than earned
What were “runs” on banks? when people panicked and took all their money out of banks with it thinking.
In May of 1938 how many people were still out of work? 11 million was still out of work.
What idea is capitalism based on? people that never invest in money of business.
Why did the Supreme Court rule against some of Roosevelt’s programs? because it gave the federal government to much power.
Why did the church order Father Charles Coughlin to stop his broadcasts? Because they went against the presidents claims
What is a drought? a long period of dry weather.
What was the nickname given to the Great Plains? What was it called after the drought? it was called the bread basket but after the drought it was a called the dust bowl
Which states were hit the hardest by the dust storms? Texas and Oklahoma
Which state did many families move to after losing everything in the dust storms? California
Why didn’t FDR support African Americans during his first term as president? Because he didn't want to lose support in the south.
What is a hobo? a homeless person that travels around looking for work.
What were the differences between country schools and schools in cities? Country schools had to use one room classrooms with as many as 50-60 people & teachers as young as 16.
What is one way African Americans experienced discrimination during the depression? During work they didn’t receive equal pay.
How did the girls in the Secret Helpers Club help people? they used their allowance to give food to the poor
What were the two main sources of entertainment for families during the depression? Radio and movies
What was the name of the child star who was in movies during the depression? Shirley temple
What does it mean for workers to go on strike? to not work till conditions got better
How did Hitler become popular in Germany? blaming the Jews for economic problems
What is war production? the making of wars
Why was FDR getting elected in 1940 special? he was the first president to
What is one way that the New Deal helped America? it gave jobs to unempoyed workers
How did women help during war time? they did jobs that men would do
Which superhero was created during the Great Depression? superman
