Migration, Industry, & Global Conflicts

| Migration | Movement of people from one place to another |
| Push/pull factors | Reasons people leave a place (push) and reasons they move to a new place (pull) |
| Great Migration | The movement of 6 million African Americans out of the rural South to the urban North/West |
| Indigenous Removal | The forced displacement of Native Americans from their ancestral lands |
| Nativism | The policy of protecting the interests of native-born inhabitants against those of immigrants |
| Repatriation | The process of returning a person to their place of origin or citizenship |
| Deportation | The action of deporting a foreigner from a country |
| Immigration | The action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country |
| Exclusion | The process of keeping a specific group out (e.g., Chinese Exclusion Act) |
| Borders | A line separating two political or geographical areas |
| Social Justice | Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society |
| Assimilation | The process of taking in and fully understanding information or culture; absorbing a minority group into the majority |
| Industrialization | The development of industries in a country or region on a wide scale |
| Tenement | A room or a set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block of apartments, often crowded |
| Settlement House | An institution in an inner-city area providing educational, recreational, and other social services |
| Idlewild | A Michigan community that was a famous resort for African Americans during segregation |
| Wellness | The state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal |
| Liberatory | Pertaining to the act of freeing or liberating |
| Oppressive | Inflicting harsh and authoritarian treatment |
| Revitalization | The action of imparting new life or vigor to something |
| Propaganda | Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause |
| Deliberation | Long and careful consideration or discussion |
| Policy | A course or principle of action adopted or proposed by a government or party |
| Imperialism | A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force |
| Colonialism | The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers |
| Resistance | The refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action |
| Annex | Append or add as an extra or subordinate part, especially to a territory |
| Neutrality | The state of not supporting or helping either side in a conflict |
| Legacy | Something that is a part of your history or that remains from an earlier time |
| Allies | In WWI, the coalition of nations (France, Britain, Russia, later US) opposing the Central Powers |
| Central Powers | In WWI, the coalition (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire) opposing the Allies |
| Patriotism | Devoted support for one's country |
| Sedition | Conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state |
| Respirator | A mask used to protect the wearer from breathing in hazardous substances |
| Homefront | The civilian population and activities of a nation whose armed forces are engaged in war abroad |
| Industry | Economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods |
| Fourteen Points | President Wilson's plan for postwar peace and stability |
| Treaty of Versailles | The 1919 treaty that ended WWI and imposed strict penalties on Germany |
| League of Nations | An international organization created after WWI to provide a forum for resolving international disputes |
