Bay of Pigs Invasion 1,500 CIA trained Cuban exiles attempt to overthrow Cuba's Communist leader Fidel Castro. The attempt fails.
Berlin Wall Built by the Soviet Union to cut communication between East and West Berlin. Came to symbolize the Cold War and Communist oppression.
Cuban Missile Crisis Standstill between the U.S. and Soviet Union after nuclear launch sites were discovered in Cuba. The world watched anxiously as it was on the brink of nuclear war.
Geneva Accords Agreement to temporarily divide North and South Vietnam to eventually be reunited after an election.
Viet Minh North Vietnamese Communists. Wanted to reunite North and South Vietnam.
Viet Cong South Vietnamese Communists. Wanted to reunite Vietnam as a communist country.
Escalation Gradual increase of military troops sent into Vietnam.
Search and Destroy missions Sought out and destroyed hideouts of the VietCong in hopes they would negotiate an end to the war.
Counterculture A group of people who opposed the war and rejected traditional American values
Deferments Given to people to excuse them from being drafted into the military.
Conscientious Objectors People who refused to participate in the war due to moral or religious beliefs.
Credibility Gap Lack of trust of statements made by the government about the war.
Vietnamization Gradual removal of troops from Vietnam and to give control back to the South Vietnamese government.
Detente Easing or relaxing of tensions between the U.S. and Soviet Union.
Glasnost Reduction of government control of the economy and allowed for local decision making.
