What are the spot Resolutions? Lincoln questioned Polk and asked him to show the exact "spot" where American blood was shed to justify the Mexican-American War
What did "54' 40'' or fight' mean? Slogan demanding the U.S. claim all of Orgeon Territory up to latitude 54'40
What caused the Mexican-American War? Manifest Destiney, Annexation of Texas, border dispute (Rio Grande vs Nueces River), and Polk's expansion goals.
What was Manifest Destiney? Believe that the U.S. was destined by God to expand across North America
Why is John Tyler important? President who supported Texas annexation and dealt with boarder disputes with Britain.
What did the cotton gin do? Machine that quickly separated cotton fibers from seeds, making cotton production boom.
Who was Eli Whitney? Inventor of the cotton gin.
What was the Amistad case? Enslaved Africans rebelled on a Spanish ship and won freedom in the Supreme Court.
What was the Caroline affair? Conflict between the U.S. and Britain involving aid to Canadian rebels.
Who was David Wilmont? Congressman who proposed banning slavery in land granted from Mexico.
Why was the election of 1844 important? Polk (2nd term) won on expansion and Manifest Destiney.
Who was Henry Clay? Whig candidate in 1844 who supported limited annexation of Texas.
What divided the Whig Party? Disagreements over expansion and slavery.
What did the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo do? Ended the Mexican-American War and gave the U.S. Mexican Cession territory.
Why did annexing Texas matter? It increased tensions with Mexico and helped cause war.
What is a joint resolution? A bill passed by both houses of Congress; used to annex Texas.
What happened with the Oregon Territory? The US and Britain divided it at the 49th parallel.
Who were the Know-Nothings? Nativist political group against immigrants and Catholics.
What was the Wilmot Provisto? Proposal to ban slavery in territory gained from Mexico; it never passed.
What was Oregon Fever? Large migration westward to Orgeon for land and opportunity.
How did the South defend slavery? claimed it was necessary for the economy and a "positive good"
What were the main types of abolitionism? Gradual - slowly stop slavery Recolonization - sending slaves to Africa Radical - ending slavery in anyway possible
What was gradualism? Slowly ending slavery over time.
What was recolonization? Plan to send freed African Americans to Africa
What did radical abolitionists believe? Slavery should end immediately by any means necessary.
Who were abolitionists? People who worked to end slavery.
What was the American Colonization Society? Organization that sent freed African Americans to Liberia
Why was the election of 1840 important? William Henry Harrison defeated Martin Van Buren using popular campaigning.
What was Southern society like? Wealthy plantation owners were at the top; most whites owned no slaves
How did slavery affect the South? It became central to the economy because of cotton production
Who was John O'Sullivan? Journalist who coined the term Manifest Destiney
What was the Bear Flag Republic? Short-lived revolt by Americans in California against Mexico
Who was Zachary Taylor? General in the Mexican-American War and later U.S. president.
Who was the Aroostook War? Border dispute between Maine and Canada.
What did the Webster-Ashburton Treaty do? Settle the Maine-Canada border dispute.
Who was John C. Fremont? Explorer and military officer involved in western expansion.
Who was Nat Turner? Led a major slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831
Who was Frederick Douglass? Former slave and famous abolitionist speaker/writer.
Who was John Slidell? Diplomat sent to buy California from Mexico
What is Liberia? African nation founded for freed African Americans
Who was William Lloyd Garrison? Radical abolitionists who published The Liberator?
Who was David Walker? Black abolitionist who wrote Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World.
Who was Sojourner Truth? Former slave who fought for abolition and women's rights.
What was the gag resolution? Rule preventing Congress from discussing anti-slavery petitions.
Who was Denmark Vesey? Planned a large slave rebellion in South Carolina?
Who was William Henry Harrison? Whig president elected in 1840; died shortly after taking office/
Who was Winfield Scott? U.S. general who captured Mexico City in the Mexican-American War
Who were the Conscience Whigs? Anti-slavery Whigs who opposed expansion of slavery.
What was the Liberty Party? Political party focused on abolishing slavery.
