Cold War

Cold War A war between the U.S. and Soviet Union over political beliefs that stopped short of actual fighting on a battlefield. Both countries built up arms to intimidate each other.
Iron Curtain An imaginary line that divided non-communist Europe and Communist Europe after World War II.
Containment Trying to stop the spread of communism
Truman Doctrine Pledged to give military aid to countries resisting the spread of communism around the world.
Marshall Plan Economic aid provided to the countries of Western Europe to weaken the appeal of communism.
Berlin Airlift American and British plan to fly food and supplies into Berlin to keep it free from communism.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or the NATO An alliance of non-communist countries working together to prevent the spread of communism.
Warsaw Pact A military alliance of the communist countries of Eastern Europe.
McCarthyism Term used to describe the use of unproven charges to discredit people
Inflation The rise of prices of consumer goods due to high consumer demand.
Fair Deal Harry Truman's plan of domestic reforms aimed to help solve economic problems.
Korean War An United Nations supported war between Communist North Korea and Non-Communist South Korea.
Stalemate A situation where neither side of a conflict is able to gain much ground or achieve victory.
Demilitarized Zone or, the DMZ A region barring military forces between North and South Korea.
Arms Race A battle to create more and more nuclear weapons. U.S. and Soviet Union competed to see who could create the most nuclear weapons after World War II.
Space Race U.S. and the Soviet Union competed in space to see which country could put a satellite in space and then eventually reach the moon.
