Reconquista A series of battles that led to the spread of Catholicism into Spain during the Middle Ages.
sponsor To finance or support a business or event.
expedition A journey, especially a difficult or dangerous one, made with lengthy planning and a clear goal.
navigation The science of planning and traveling along a route to reach a particular location.
entrepreneur A person who organizes and operates a business.
treaty A formal agreement between two or more nations.
circumnavigate To go completely around.
strait A narrow waterway connecting two larger bodies of water.
conquistador A conqueror, especially one of the 16th-century Spanish soldiers who defeated the Indian civilizations of Mexico, Central America, or Peru.
reform To improve or change the condition of something.
missionary Someone sent on a mission, especially one sent to do religious or charitable work in a territory or foreign country.
Northwest Passage A water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through northern Canada.
mutiny Rebellion against authority, especially rebellion of sailors against superior officers.
ecosystem An ecological community and its environment, functioning as a whole.
Columbian Exchange The movement of peoples, livestock, plants, and technologies between continents that resulted from the European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
oral tradition The spoken way of preserving culture and history, often through storytelling.
