The Growth of the Republic

Northwest Territory -The US believed the land belonged to them -The Indigenous Nations living there believed they were sovereign nations and it was their home
Lewis and Clark Expedition -Meriweather Lewis was asked to explore the Louisiana Territory by Thomas Jefferson -Lewis and Clark were trying to find a direct water route to the Pacific Ocean and to learn about the land, plants, animals and people
Slavery -Closely connected the nation's territorial and economic growth -Created enormous wealth for the white people who enslaved them
Cotton Gin -Invented by Eli Whitney -It separated the cotton fiber from the cotton seed which allowed cotton to be processed much faster than by hand
Education -George Washington believed education allowed people to make good choices in government decisions -Washington believed people should to be educated to participate in government
Resistence: Slavery -Enslaved people resisted oppression in many ways -Education was an act of resistence because reading and writing was illegal for enslaved people
Henry "Box" Brown Escaped slavery by mailing himself in box to Philadelphia
Indigenous Nations -Attempted to protect their sovereignty -Petitioned the US government -Signed treaties -Wrote their own declarations of independence using United States declared values
President Andrew Jackson -Did not recognize the sovereignty of the Cherokee people -Supported the removal of the Cherokee people through the Indian Removal Act
Trail of Tears -May 1838 -Forced removal of the Cherokee from their homeland
Economy & Workers Many industries were an important part of the economy: -whaling -teaching -farming -steamboat transportation
