Civil War A war between people of the same country
Fugitive Slave Act One of two acts passed in 1793 and 1850 that provided for the capture and return of fugitive slaves
Treason A betrayal of or action against one’s country
Martyr A person who dies for his or her beliefs
54th Massachusetts Regiment An African American unit in the Union army
Draft A law that requires people of a certain age to enlist in the military
Habeas Corpus The right to not be held in prison without first being charged with a specific crime
Emancipation Proclamation A law issued by President Lincoln in 1863 that declared all enslaved people in southern states to be freed
13th Amendment Forbids slavery and involuntary servitude except as a punishment for a crime
14th Amendment Defined citizenship for all people born in the U.S. Guarantees due process of law, and mandates equal protection under the law for all citizens
15th Amendment Prohibits right to vote from being denied based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude
Underground Railroad Network of people, places, and routes that helped enslaved people escape to freedom
Missouri Compromise An agreement to keep the # of slave states and free states equal
Popular Sovereignty Government by the consent of the governed
Secede To withdraw from membership in a group
Fugitive A runaway
