Academic Verbs

Verbs for MCAP

TermDefinition
Central/Main Idea the point message or argument an author wants to convey about a topic
Details An individual feature fact or item from the text.
Theme The main moral or what you should learn from the story
Claims State or assert something is the truth
Evidence A fact or piece of information to support or oppose the claim.
Explanation/Reasoning A reason or justification given for an action or belief.
Tone The emotion the author is writing in.
Mood The emotion the reader gets.
Conflict A serious disagreement or argument.
Text Organization/Structure How the information is arranged in the text.
Point of View (Perspective) The viewpoint of somebody or something
Setting Where and when the story takes place
Characters The people or animals who drive the plot.
Plot The main events of a text.
Author’s Intention/Purpose Why the author is writing a text.
Passage A short extract from a book.
Excerpt A small part of a larger text.
Prompt Something designed to elicit a response
Stanza The building blocks of formal poetry.
Narrative A story that you write or tell someone.
Cause/Effect A cause makes an effect.
Chronological Order The order in which things actually happened.
