James L. Farmer Jr. From East Texas. Intended to become a Methodist minister but chose activism. In 1942 he organized (CORE) Congress of Racial Equality which followed nonviolent principles to fight racial discrimination.
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Formed the American G.I. Forum of Texas in Corpus Christi to fight for equal rights for Mexican Americans for which he witnessed while serving during WWII. Awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1984.
Raymond L. Telles Aid to US President Truman and Eisenhower. Ambassador to Costa Rica during JFK presidency. First Mexican American elected mayor El Paso. Policies reflected equality for Mexican and African Americans.
Henry B. Gonzalez First Mexican-American member of the San Antonio city council. Became a member of the Texas Senate in 1956. Ran for Texas governor in 1958. First Hispanic Texan to serve in the US House of Representatives.
Raul A. Gonzales Jr. Grew up in Weslaco Texas. Graduate from the University of Texas and while he was in college he was active in the civil rights movement in the 1960's. Received a law degree in 1966 and appointed to Texas Supreme Court serving from 1984-98.
Michael Debakey A Houston Doctor, invented or perfected many of the medical devices and procedures that have become commonplace in heart surgery.
Denton Cooley A Houston Doctor, was first person to place an artificial heart in a patient.
Dr. Benjy Frances Brooks First Texas woman to become a board certified pediatric surgeon. Her foundation is credited with advancing the surgical care of children.
Lyndon B. Johnson Became President after the assassination of JFK. He was Democrat that served in US Congress, Senate, and Vice president. Signed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. Launched the Great Society program of change.
Lulu Belle Madison White Texas civil rights activist who played important part in the fight against segregation. She began teaching and left in 1930's to devote time for NAACP. Built Houston chapter into the largest chapter in the south, and name its executive secretary.
Sam Rayburn One of two powerful Texans in Congress in 1950's. From Bonham Texas.
Walter Cunningham Scientist who piloted the first manned flight in the Apollo mission. Became a successful business owner in Houston. His company provides money to companies that develop new technologies.
Ovetta Culp Hobby The first Secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and 1st commanding officer of the Women's Army Corps(WAC). She believed everyone who has served in military should get to celebrate Armed Forces Day. Served in WW2.
Barbra Jordan First female African American elected to the Texas in 1967, and first woman to run for President of the US. 1973 she was elected to serve Texas in the US House of Representatives.
James Baker Under Reagan Administration in 1981 named chief of staff, later became secretary of treasury. Under Bush Sr. served as secretary of state, later chief of staff. Helped steer US foreign policy after collapse of communism.
Civil Rights Act of 1964 Banned discrimination based on race, sex, religion, and national origin.
Voting Rights Act of 1965 Made literacy tests illegal, which led to an increase in African American voter registration.
LULAC League of United Latin American Citizens emphasized the duties of being citizens while encouraging Mexican Americans to honor their heritage.
Discrimination The act, practice, or instance of unfairly treating a person or group differently from other people or groups.
Segregation Separated based on membership in a racial or ethnic group.
Equality The quality or state of being equal.
Civil Rights Rights that citizens are guaranteed by their government through legislation or other government action to ensure equal opportunity.
Synthesis The composition of parts or elements so as to form a whole.
Loyalty Oath Affirming the loyalty of its taker as to sovereign, government, or party principles.
"Red Scare" Driven by fears of communist takeover, and cold war anxieties.
Analyze To study or determine the nature and relationship of the parts of something.
Martin Luther King Jr. Led protests against segregation and discrimination and later was assassinated.
