Jackson Era Terms (15 question MC Quiz)

Democratic Party A political party formed by Andrew Jackson and his supporters after the presidential election of 1824. Largely supported by "common people", and working/poor class
Jacksonian Democracy A policy of spreading more political power to more people. It was a "Common Man" theme. Voting qualifications became lesser around the time of Jackson and poorer white men were able to vote
Tariff of Abombinations doubled the rates, tariffs on some goods; outraged the South; bitter debate over State's rights.
states' rights doctrine Calhoun and others' beliefs that the power of the states should be greater than the power of the federal government
Corrupt Bargain Refers to the presidential election of 1824 in which Henry Clay, the Speaker of the House, convinced the House of Representatives to elect Adams rather than Jackson.
Spoils System the system of employing and promoting civil servants who are friends and supporters of the group in power (used by Jackson)
Jackson's war on the bank Jackson removes federal funds from national bank, forcing it into bankruptcy. The state banks that got the federal money start to give out too much money causing inflation Jackson felt like the bank gave too much power to the federal government
Panic of 1837 Jackson moves money from the national bank to state banks. These banks gave too much money. Jackson issues the Specie Circular to force the payment for federal lands w/ gold/silver. State banks collapsed as a result. A panic ensued. National Bank fails.
Nullification Crisis A sectional crisis during the presidency of Jackson created by an attempt by the state of South Carolina to nullify a federal law - the tariff of 1828 - passed by the Congress. Ended via compromise by Congress, with Henry Clay
Indian Removal Act of 1830 Passed by Congress under the Jackson administration, this act removed all Indians east of the Mississippi to an "Indian Territory" where they would be "permanently" housed.
Worcester v. Georgia Supreme Court Decision - Cherokee Indians were entitled to federal protection from the actions of state governments which would infringe on the tribe's sovereignty - Jackson ignored it
