How did the Tudors come to power? War broke out between two branches of Plantagenet family who ruled from 1154 – 1485. Henry Tudor (became Henry VII) killed King Richard III, the last Plantagenet king, at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
What was the War of the Roses? Period of war from 1450s - 1485 between two branches of the Plantagenet family, the House of York and the House of Lancaster.
Why was it called the War of the Roses? Named after the symbols each side used (the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster).
Why did Lady Jane Grey only rule for 9 days? She was only queen for 9 days because Edward's older sister Mary claimed the throne and had Lade Jane Grey imprisoned and executed in 1554.
Who was Lady Jane Grey? Cousin of Edward VI, whom he chose to succeed him, instead of his Catholic sister Mary (Mary I/'Bloody Mary',) in order to keep keep the country Protestant.
When & why did Edward's rule end? Edward was not a healthy boy and in 1553 he became very ill. He died aged 15.
How old was Edward VI when he became King? 9 years old
When was Henry VIII on the throne? Henry VIII (King from 1509 – 1547)
How long did Henry VII reign? Henry VII (King from1485 – 1509)
Why was Henry VIII's daughter Mary called 'Bloody Mary'? Mary I (Queen 1553 – 1558) was a devout Catholic & quickly brought the Catholic faith back to England. Mary punished Protestants and many people were burned at the stake during her reign.
Which Tudor monarch ruled for the longest? Elizabeth I (Queen 1558 – 1603) Ruled for 44 years.

Why was Elizabeth's reign called England's 'The Golden Age'? due to the wealth and power that England gained during this time.

What was Henry VIII desperate to have? A male heir.
Why did Henry VIII become King? His older brother Arthur died.
Who was Henry VIII's first wife? Catherine of Aragon
What reason did Henry give for divorcing Catherine of Aragon? She had been married to his brother Arthur. Henry quoted the Bible to say no-one should marry their brother's wife. (This really meant not at the same time, but Henry twisted the meaning to his advantage.)
How long did Henry VII rule for? 24 years
What is Henry VII known for? Being careful with money and raising a lot through taxes.
Why did Henry VII marry his enemy, Edward III's, niece? Marrying Edward III's niece, Elizabeth of York, brought peace to the warring Plantagenet houses by uniting them.
Who plotted to have Elizabeth killed? Mary Queen of Scots, her cousin.
Who did Elizabeth send ships into battle to fight? Philip of Spain.
