Industrial Rev Vocab

TermDefinition
Cottage Industry A business where goods (like cloth) are made by hand in people's own small homes instead of a big factory.
Merchant A person who buys and sells goods, like wool or cloth, to make a profit.
Raw Materials Basic items used to make something else (for example: wool from a sheep is used to make a shirt).
Agricultural Revolution A time when new inventions made farming much faster and easier, requiring fewer workers.
Seed Drill A machine that automatically plants seeds in neat rows instead of scattering them by hand.
Urbanization The process of many people moving from the quiet countryside to busy cities to find work.
Middle Class A social group made of business owners and merchants who became wealthy during the revolution.
Working Class The group of people who worked long hours in factories or mines for low pay to survive.
Slums Crowded, dirty, and poor neighborhoods in cities where many factory workers lived.
Labor Hard physical work, especially the work done by people in exchange for money.
Textiles Any type of cloth or woven fabric; this was the first industry to use big machines.
Steam Power Energy created by heating water with coal; it was used to run engines and factory machines.
Spinning Jenny An invention that allowed one person to spin many spools of thread at the same time.
Factory System A way of making goods where many workers and machines are brought together in one large building.
Mass Production Making a huge number of the exact same item very quickly using machines.
