| Polis | A Greek city-state that acts like its own independent country |
| City-state | Isolated settlements with different beliefs and forms of gov't, among other things |
| Hoplite | A soldier in the ancient Greek army that were on foot and carried spears |
| Phalanx | A formation in which Hoplites assembled in for battle; they stood in lines with their spears raised, facing the enemy |
| Acropolis | A hill that forts, agoras, and markets were on. Surrounded by farms + neighborhoods |
| Agora | A market and also a public space for debating |
| Citizen | Someone who was born in or owned lots of land in a city-state. Anyone could be a citizen, but only men got its accompanying rights |
| Aristocrat | A very wealthy person who sometimes advised the king |
| Monarchy | One (mono) king ruled and was advised by aristocrats. His rule was either passed down from father to son, or a new king was elected |
| Oligarchy | A form of government where a few (oli) aristocrats overtook the king. They made the rich richer and the poor poorer |
| Tyranny | Where power is taken by force. Tyrants were often popular and supported common people. Very unstable/volatile, though |
| Democracy | Rule by the people. Pretty good, except too many cooks in the kitchen/dumber citizens could be persuaded to vote unwisely |
| Rights and responsibilities | Male citizens had rights. They included voting, running for public office, going to court, and own property |
