| Reign of Terror | Series of public executions and massacres to strike fear into those who opposed the Committee of Public Safety |
| Committee of Public Safety | created during French Revolution to defend the nation against foreign and domestic enemies, and oversee the government |
| Bourgeoisie | A term used in France to identify the middle class |
| Suffrage | The right to vote |
| Decree | A formal order having the force of law |
| Guillotine | A device designed to cut the head off a person |
| Despotism | A system of government in which the ruler has absolute or unlimited power |
| Exile | Forced or voluntary absence from one’s country or homeland |
