Reading Core

QuestionAnswer
Phoneme The smallest single unit of a sound in a language that distinguishes one morpheme (meaning unit) from another.
Grapheme A written or printed representation of a phoneme.
Phonemic Awareness The awareness of individual sounds or phonemes as objects can be analyzed and manipulated.
Phonological Awareness The awareness of individual words and syllables as objects that can be analyzed and manipulated.
Onset Pattern Initial consonant letters at the beginning of syllables and words, such as b, c, d, f, g, sn, st, or str.
Rime Pattern A limited set of the most common ending to syllables and wards, such as -ake, -ack, -ail, or -ame.
Explicit Instruction A structured, systematic teaching method that directly teaches students specific skills and knowledge in a clear, unambiguous way.
Consonant Diagraph Two different consonant letters that appear together and represent a single sound, or phoneme, that is not usually associated with either letter.
Consonant Blend Two or three consecutive consonant letters, each representing a separate phoneme that are blended together.
Context Clues Information around a word that provides assistance in determining its pronunciation and meaning.
Sight Words Words recognized automatically without conscious attention.
Morpheme The smallest unit of meaning in a language.
Affix A prefix or a suffix.
Close Syllable A syllable ending in a consonant letter, which usually makes the vowel sound short.
Open Syllable A syllable ending in a vowel letter, which usually makes the vowel sound long.
Orthography The writing system of a language.
Structured Literacy A teaching approach that uses a systematic and explicit method to teach oral and written language, focusing on the structure of language.
Decoding The ability to translate a word from print to speech by using your knowledge of sound-symbol (letter) correspondences.
Encoding The process of converting spoken word into written form, essentially the act of spelling and writing words.
Morphemic Analysis Concerned with how meaning is determined by the combination of morphemes, the smallest units of meaning in a language.
Phonics Refers to how sounds are represented by letters.
How many morphemes does the word "construct" have? 2.
How many morphemes and syllables does the word "protected" have? 3 morphemes, 3 syllables.
How many graphemes does the written word "poles" have? 5.
What is the best predictor of later reading success for kindergarten children? Phonemic Awareness.
