Colonial America

Colonial Regions and 13 Colonies

TermDefinition
colony a place where people move from one country to live in a new land, but the land is still ruled by their home country.
plantation large farm where one main crop is grown and sold.
cash crop a crop that farmers grow to sell for money, not just to eat themselves.
New England Colonial Region the northern part of the 13 colonies. The land had rocky soil and many forests, so people worked in fishing, shipbuilding, and lumber instead of large farming.
Middle Colonial Region the area that had good soil and mild weather, which made them great for farming. Farmers grew lots of grain like wheat and corn, so this region was sometimes called the breadbasket colonies.
Southern Colonial Region the area that had warm weather and long growing seasons, which helped large farms called plantations grow cash crops like tobacco, rice, and indigo.
merchant a person who buys and sells goods to make money.
barter trading goods or services without using money.
export to send goods to another country to sell them.
