Life in the American Colonies

| Diversity | Variety, such as of ethnic or national groups |
| Cash crop | A crop that can be sold easily in markets |
| Triangular trade | Trade route between three destinations, such as Britain, West , Africa,and the West indies |
| Slave code | Rules focusing on the behavior and punishment of enslaved people |
| Representative goverment | A system by which people elect delegates to make laws and conduct goverment |
| Mercantilism | An economic theory whose goal is building a states wealth and power by increasing exports and accumulating precious metals in return |
| Export | To sell aboard |
| Import | To bring in from foreign markets |
| Immigration | The perment movement of people into one country from other nations |
| Epidemic | An illness that affects large numbers of people |
| apperentice | A young person who learns a trade from a skilled craftspersonn |
| Milita | A military force made up of ordinary citizens |
| Iroquois confederacy | A group of Native American nations in eastern North America joined together under one general goverment |

| Revenue | Incoming money from taxes or other sources |
| Writ of assistance | Court document allowing customs officers to enters any locations to search for smuggled goods |
| Civic virtue | The democratic ideas, practice, and values that are at the heart of citizenship in a free society |
| Resolution | an offical expression of opinion by a group |
| Effigy | a mocking figure represening an unpopular indivialual |
| Boycott | to refuse to buy items in order to show disapporval or force accpetance of one terms |
| Repeal | to cancel an act or law |
| Rebellion | open defiance of authority |
| Propaganda | ideas or inforamtion intentionally spread to harm or help a cause |
| Committee of correspondence | an organization that spread political ideas and information through the colonies |
| Minuteman | during Revolutiontary era,civilian sworn to be ready to fight with only one mintue´s notice |
| Loyalist | American colonist who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence |
| Patriot | Amercian colonist who favored American independence |
| Petition | a formal request |
| Preamble | the introduction to a formal document that often tells why the document was written |
| Mercenary | Hired soldier |
| Recruit | to enlist in the military |
| Inflation | When it takes more and more money to buy tha same amount of goods |
| Blockade | meaure that keeps ships from entering or leaving a harbor |
| Privateer | privateley owned ship outfitted with weapons |
