What was Lincolns 10% plan known as? Plan that had 10% of southern voters take loyalty to the Union and rejoin the Union but is seen as a lenient approach
What is the Wade Davis Bill? Vetoed by Lincoln and basically the same as his plan but 50% of the population and take an "iron clad" vote
What party was Andrew Johnson? Southern Democrat who believed white men should govern the South and that he was following Lincoln
What happened when 6 Confederate cabinet member and 4 generals were elected into office? Congress refused to admit them and a showdown between them and Johnson occurs about Reconstruction
Who were now free and fully counted as people so the South could have more seats? Freedmen
What is Black Codes? Restricts African Americans freedom, no guns, no owning land in town, be in employment of white man
What two riots happened because of black codes? Memphis and New Orleans riots
What do Radical Republicans want to do at this time? Transform southern society, protect freedmen, and punish ex-Confederates
Who leads the Radical Republicans? Thaddeus Stevens and Charles Sumner
What two things did Congress override Johnson's veto? Extension of Freedmen Bureau and the Civil Rights Act of 1866
What is the Freedmen Bureau? An agency that helped protect African Americans, aid them, and give education
What is the base of the 14th Amendment? The Civil Rights Act
What is the 14th Amendment? Citizenship to all born in the U.S. (Citizenship means equal protection in the U.S.)
Who was the first president to get impeached? Andrew Johnson, House impeaches him and Senate falls short of 1 vote
What is Congressional Reconstruction? The Congress take over Reconstruction instead of the president and required to respect Freedmen and ratify the 13 and 14
What are Carpetbaggers? Northerners who went to the South right after the war to help Reconstruction and seek opportunity
What are Scalawags? White Southerners who cooperate with Republicans, seen as traitors
What is the Tenure of Office Act? Restricted Johnson power to fire officials
How did Johnson go against the Tenure Office Act? He fired the secretary of war, Edwin Stanton which then got him impeached
Who ran in the 1868 election? Ulysses S. Grant and Horatic Seymour and Republicans won
How did Grant win? African Americans voted for him and then Grand shows the 15th Amendment to ensure African Americans can vote
What was the South's economy like after the war? Shattered, and large production decline
What is Sharecropping? A landowner provided land and supplies, and laborers gave a share of there crop, lead to cycles of debt
What is Tenant Farming? It allowed farmers to rent land from the rich to farm, but still poverty but not as bad
What systems did Tenant Farming and Sharecropping enforce? Economic dependence and Subjugation
What is the KKK? A group that had a violent reaction to reconstruction and used fear to try to stop African Americans from voting
What was the main party the KKK was apart of? Democratic party in the white South
How did Grant react to the KKK? He sent strong federal intervention to arrest KKK members and protect civil rights
What two acts helped get rid of the KKK temporarily? Enforcement Acts and KKK Acts (1870-1871)
What did many African Americans hope for after the war? "40 acres and a mule" but most never got it
What is the greatest legacy in Freedmen's Bureau? Education to all, specifically the public school system
What is the 15th Amendment? Granted black men the right to vote
Who was the first African American Senator from Mississippi? Hiram Revels
Who was the first African American in the House from SC? Joseph Rainy
What is Grantism? Grant is personally honest but politically naive
What was it called when white Democrats started taking over again in 1877? Redeemer or Redemption
What are Liberal Republicans? People who broke with Grant and nominated Horace Greely
What is the greatest legacy that Freedmen Bureau established? Education, Public school system

What scandal had distillers giving Government officials money so they could skip on paying tax revenues? Whiskey Ring
What is the Panic of 1873? Economic Depression because of failure of finances and weakened public support for Reconstruction

What happened at the end of Reconstruction? Redeemer Democrats dominated and Supreme court decision to end it was unconstitutional (14 and 15)
Who ran in the election of 1876? Rutherford B. Hapes (R) vs Samuel Tilden (D) and Hapes wins
What happened when Hapes was elected? Official end of Reconstruction
What happened after the Official end of Reconstruction? Federal troops withdrew from the south, south segregated, returned south to "Home Rule"

What is the Reconstruction Act of 1867? Congressional/Radical Reconstruction, South divided into 5 military districts, and states must ratify 14th Amendment
What is the Civil Rights Act of 1866? First federal law to define citizenship and give rights regardless of race and Johnson vetoed but Congress override
What is Johnson's plan of Reconstruction? Southern states must ratify 13 Amendment, Former Confeds quickly regain power, like Lincolns but pardons for one and all
