Greece

TermDefinition
Aroga Open space used as both a market and a place where people could meet and debate issues.
Athens Used a democracy, another powerful city-state in Greece.
City state An independent state that was made up of a city and the surrounding land and villages.
Classical Civilization An advanced state of development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and science, the use of record keeping, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions.
Colony A settlement in a new territory that keeps close ties to its homeland.
Crete Island that lies southeast of the Greek mainland.
Democracy All citizens share in running the government.
Direct Democracy Each citizen votes firsthand on laws and policies. People gather at mass meetings to decide on government matters.
Empire A group of countries of regions that are controlled by one ruler or one government.
Golden Age A period of peace, prosperity, and cultural achievements
Helots Enslaved workers held captive by the Spartans.
Minoans A group of people who were not Greek, but their civilization was the first to arise in the region that later became Greece.
Monarchy A system of government that is ruled by a king or queen.
Mycenaeans People from central Asia, who invaded the Greek mainland around 1900 b.c.
Oligarchy A few people hold power.
Peninsula A body of land with water on three sides.
Philosophy “ Love of Wisdom”. Led to the study of history, political science, science, and mathematics.
Polis Greek city-state (similar to a tiny independent country)
Representative Democracy Citizens choose a smaller group to make laws and governmental decisions on their behalf.
Sparta Used an oligarchy, powerful city-state in Greece.
Tyrant A person who taken power by force and rules with total authority
