Citizenship Test

QuestionAnswer
Federalism? Sharing power between the central government and the states.
Delegated powers? Powers granted to the federal government.
Reserved powers? Powers reserved to the citizens and the state governments.
Concurrent powers? Powers shared by the state and federal government.
Popular Sovereignty? The idea that political authority belongs to the people.
Separation of powers? The authority to govern must be spread among three levels and branches of government.
Checks and Balances? A system set up by the Constitution that keeps any one branch from becoming too powerful.
Which branch makes the nations laws? The Legislative branch.
Elastic clause? Allows the government to be flexible when creating new laws.
Who enforces laws passed by Congress? The executive branch.
Apportionment? Planned distribution of representation.
Veto? To cancel a law passed by Congress (2/3 majority to overturn)
Commander-in-chief? The supreme commander of the armed forces of a nation.
Pardon? Freedom of punishment.
Cabinet? Department secretaries that advise the President(Executive department)
Impeach? A vote to bring charges against a President.
Executive Order? A presidential command that has the power of law.
Judicial review? Courts can strike down laws/actions found to be unconstitutional.
How long are Supreme court justices terms? They serve for life.
Petition? To make a request of government?
What's the fourth amendment? Protects against "unreasonable search and seizures" (requires a search warrant)
Search warrant? An order permitting authorities to look through someone's property.
Fifth amendment? Requires due process.
Due process? Fair hearing or trail.
Indict? To formally accuse.
Double Jepordy? Cannot be tired for the same crime twice.
Eminent domain? The power to take personal property in order to benefit the public.
Naturalized Citizen? When a foreign born citizen is granted full citizenship.
Deport? To return to country of origin.
Draft? Required military service.
Political Action Committee(PAC)? A group that collects money to give to a candidate that supports certain issues.
Interest groups? Groups that are forced to lobby, or try to influence politicians on behalf of certain issues.
