What is Globalisation? The increasing interconnectedness, increased blend of norms and cultures, and the increased interdependence of societies
What is Migration? Changing country of usual residence for at least a year
What is Immigration? Entering a country not of usual residence for at least a year
What is Emigration? Leaving a country of usual residence for at least a year
What are Push and Pull Factors? Push: Reasons to leave a country. Pull: Reasons to go to a country
What was the main cause of Population Change in the 1950s and 1960s? Natural (Births), and improved health care
Was the Population Growth of the UK in the 1950s and 1960s high or low? And why? A high positive change, caused by a Baby Boom after WW2
What were the patterns of Migration in the 1950s - 70s? Negative Net Migration (More people leaving than entering), a rise in Post Colonial Immigrants from South Asia, Africa and the Caribbean brought in to replace workers and doctors after WW2
What is the British Nationality Act 1947? The act allowed members of British Colonies to become British Citizens by moving to the UK
What was the main cause of Population Change in the 1970s and 1980s? Natural (Births)
Was the Population Growth of the UK in the 1970s and 1980s high or low? And why? A low positive change (in the 70s), caused by changes in gender equality and policy change relating to the family. An increasing positive change (in the 80s), caused by Boomers having children
What were the patterns of Migration in the 1970s - 1980s? Brits continued to emigrate to white commonwealth countries, the UK joins the 'free movement policy', Family Reunification is introduced allowing Asian and Black individuals to migrate their families to the UK
What was the Free Movement Policy? Allowed citizens of the EU to move freely to different countries to live or work there
What was the main cause of Population Change in the 1990s? 60% Migration, 40% Natural
Was the Population Growth of the UK in the 1990s high or low? And why? High positive, immigration increasing to heights of 160,000 and the gender liberation movements of the time encouraged women to have less children
What were the patterns of Migration in the 1990s? Increased asylum seekers from Columbia, Somalia, Eastern Europe and Hong Kong (after Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule), the UK recruits high and low skilled workers from other countries to work in the growing tech and IT markets

What were the patterns of Migration in the 2010s? Syrian refugee crisis and 'threat' if Croatia joining the EU encourages Brexit, ending EU free movement and lowering Eastern European Immigration to the UK
What was the main cause of Population Change in the 2020s? Migration, COVID
Was the Population Growth of the UK in the 2020s high or low? And why? Low/Negative, due to COVID killing thousands, immigration reached heights of 872,000
What were the patterns of Migration in the 2020s? Ukraine Refugees, Hong Kong British Nationals, Conservatives' 'post study work' VISA increasing student immigration, and VISAs for care workers increasing Indian and Nigeria immigrants.

Why did immigration sharply fall in 2025? Boom in immigration caused Conservatives to restrict VISAs of families of students and care workers to come to the UK

According to Bhatti, how did the Immigration of South Asians to the UK affect Family Types? South Asian and Traditional Values: More likely to be religious, patriarchal, traditional extended family, multiple generations in one household, and more likely to be in traditional marriages
According to Berthoud, how did the Immigration of Black Families to the UK affect Family Types? Black Families and Individualism: More likely to cohabit, be in LPF's, practice serial monogamy, and focus on choice and individualism
What is the Global Extended Family? Multiple nuclear families in multiple households across the globe, providing support to each other despite the geographical distance
How has Migration affected Marriage and Divorce? Increase in Marriage and Decrease in divorce, due to stronger religion and cultural values, but not enough to prevent overall trends within the UK
How has Migration affected Demographic Trends? Increase in Fertility and Birth Rates, Increase in Family Size, Decrease in Average Age. Not enough to affect overall trends in the UK
