John Quincy Adams The sixth president of the United States, whose presidency was marked by the controversial “Corrupt Bargain” election of 1824.
Corrupt Bargain The accusation that John Quincy Adams won the presidency by making a secret deal with Henry Clay during the election of 1824.
Andrew Jackson The seventh president, known as “Old Hickory,” who supported the common man and expanded presidential power.
Age of Jackson A period in the early 1800s marked by expanded democracy, stronger presidential power, and increased political participation.
Universal White Male Suffrage The expansion of voting rights to most white men, even if they did not own land.
Nullification The idea that a state has the right to reject a federal law it believes is unconstitutional.
Nullification Crisis A conflict between South Carolina and the federal government over tariffs during Andrew Jackson’s presidency.
Indian Removal Act A law signed by Andrew Jackson in 1830 that forced Native American tribes to move west of the Mississippi River.
Trail of Tears The forced relocation of Native Americans during which thousands died from disease, hunger, and exposure.
Second Bank of the United States A national bank that Andrew Jackson opposed, believing it favored wealthy elites.
Bank War Andrew Jackson’s fight to destroy the Second Bank of the United States.
Spoils System The practice of rewarding political supporters with government jobs.
Martin Van Buren The eighth president of the United States, who faced the economic crisis known as the Panic of 1837.
Panic of 1837 A severe economic depression that began shortly after Martin Van Buren took office.
William Henry Harrison The ninth president, who served the shortest term after dying only 31 days into office.
John Tyler The tenth president and first vice president to become president after the death of a president.
Presidential Succession The order in which government officials take over the presidency if the president can no longer serve.
Veto Power The authority of the president to reject laws passed by Congress.
States’ Rights The belief that states should have more power than the federal government.
Annexation of Texas The process by which the Republic of Texas became part of the United States during John Tyler’s presidency.
